Education reporter

The Seattle Times has a temporary, one-year opening for a reporter to cover K-12 education and the Seattle schools. Education coverage is one of The Seattle Times’ top priorities. This is a great opportunity for a candidate with a minimum of 2-3 years experience and a proven track record as a beat reporter who can develop enterprise and watchdog stories. We want a reporter who knows how to dig deep but can also write compelling stories for A1. Strong multi-media skills and experience covering education are big pluses.

Social-media experience is expected, as is a demonstrated interest in nontraditional storytelling, including the use of video, data and graphics. The Seattle Times may have an opening for a three-year reporting residency designed for beginning journalists with some professional experience. The program gives journalists a range of newsroom experiences, plus on-the-job training and development. We're looking for someone who's shown an ability to find and break news, write engaging feature and enterprise stories, and shown a passion for watchdog journalism. Strong digital and multimedia skills are essential. Residents will receive a development plan and regular feedback, and be assigned a mentor. Applicants must have graduated by the time the residency begins. Applicants must have had some successful internships at news organizations and/or a year or two of experience at daily newspapers or other media organizations. Applicants must have a car.

Are your communication skills on par with your HTML, CSS and JS skills? Do you like to spend at least part of your day with the headphones off, planning development tasks and seeing them through? We’re looking for a front-end developer to join the newsroom and innovate new ways to bring our journalism to life online. The news apps developer will prototype, develop and improve our digital storytelling tools, including the use of databases, mapping and charting, and be able to work effectively across all departments.

We’re looking for a digitally savvy news producer with strong news judgment, copy editing and leadership skills to edit, guide and curate our digital offerings. This is a demanding role that requires a solid foundation in journalistic principles, great communication skills, and a willingness to keep up with the latest tools and techniques for digital production. Some nights and weekend shifts required.

News Interactive Designer

The Seattle Times is looking for a front-end designer with development experience – someone who is foremost a journalist who wants to dive deep into innovative news and storytelling on digital platforms. Candidates are expected to be hands-on designer/developers and have deep experience in visual presentation. Candidates should be able to negotiate the demands of daily news as well as think broadly and innovate solutions for ongoing projects. The News Interactive Designer will lead the design, development and improvement of both internal and public-facing news tools and apps. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in journalism, visual journalism, computer science or related discipline and 5 years of experience at a multiplatform news organization. Experience in cross-functional teams is desired; project management experience preferred. Must have experience with visual presentation, responsive design, information architecture, data visualization, modern UI conventions, and JavaScripts (JQuery, Backbone or other MVC framework), HTML/CSS (including responsive design and LESS/Sass), WordPress and Git.

The video editor will work with material generated by photojournalists and reporters to create video content as well as provide video training and coaching. Our video team has created work that has been recognized with local, regional, and national awards, including Edward R. Murrow Awards and an Emmy nomination. We are looking for a video editor who can help us move the bar even higher.

The Seattle Times Business staff is seeking a hard-driving, enterprising reporter to cover one of the most influential corporations in the world: Microsoft. This reporter should have considerable experience covering business and technology in print and online, and should take pride at being ahead of not only local competitors, but the national media as well. He or she must be skilled at working with financial documents, understanding technology and breaking through a PR machine second to none. This person needs to be skilled at anticipating events, putting together stories that connect the dots and explaining to our readers why these events are important. Writing abilities must be sharp and wide-ranging enough to appear regularly on A1, the Business section cover and in a blog. Availability to travel is also a must.
